For those who are not aware, the Mass as we celebrate it daily and each Sunday is not the only approved way to celebrate Mass in the Roman Catholic Church. The Mass that we celebrate in English is the ordinary or normal way that Mass is celebrated in the Roman Catholic Church (the “Ordinary Form”). However, it is permitted to celebrate Mass as it was prior to the Second Vatican Council’s reform of the liturgy. This Mass is celebrated in Latin, and although following generally the same format of the Ordinary Form Mass, it does look a bit different (as those who attended Mass in the early 1960’s or before will remember). This form of the Mass has been named the “Extraordinary Form” (“extra” is the prefix that means “outside of” - so this means essentially “outside the ordinary/normal”).
We have begun to regularly celebrate Mass in the Extraordinary Form at Annunciation. This Mass is held at 2:00 in the afternoon on Sundays. We endeavor to hold a Missa Cantata or "sung Mass" on the first Sunday of the month and a "low Mass" on the other Sundays.
All are invited to attend (this is a valid Roman Catholic Mass and fulfills Sunday Mass obligation). There will be booklets at the entrance of the Church to assist in following along, and a weekly pamphlet provided that contains the prayers and readings unique to the day along with translation in English.
