"Sacraments are signs instituted by Christ to give grace"
Baltimore Catechism
This definition of a Sacrament is just a simple summary of the mystery of God's plan for providing us with a means for salvation. Through each of the sacraments we are invited into a deeper partcipation in the life of Christ including His Passion, Death, Resurrection and Assumption.
The sacraments are more than mere rites of passage on a human scale. Each Sacrament brings into spiritual reality what we experience through our senses. So for example, the waters of Baptism do not just ritually clense us, or acknowledge our thrist for God. They actually clense us of original and personal sin while provideing us with the grace we need to be united with God ,the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
