  • description

Our Prayer Shawl ministry is a prayer group that knits or crochets shawls for the ill, lonely or for people in need of comfort.  This winter as so many are staying indoors seems like a good time to rejuvenate this ministry.
Traditionally this group would pray as they work on their shawls individually, gather monthly to pray for the individuals who will receive the shawls and then representatives of the group would present the shawl to the recipient with a blessing. While not everyone may be able to gather  to prayer over the shawls to be distributed and we may have to entrust shawls into the hands of our priests to be delivered at this time, folks can still be praying and working at home.
There are no specific prayers that knitters must say as they work. Your prayers may be simple but should be intentional as you work. Think of it as weaving your prayers into the shawl you are working on.
This is an ideal way for both experienced and new knitters to pray with a purpose, while sharing your loving care with those isolated within out community as we socially distance.
If you would like to learn more about this ministry please contact Leone Perreault or check out the resources on this page.

  • A Shawl Maker's Prayer

    Dear Lord:
Bless my hands as I knit (crochet) today.
May each twist of the yarn guide me to create a pattern of love and comfort in my work
and remind me of your ultimate protection.
Wrap me in your spirit so that I will be more caring towards those in need.
Grant me patience as I create this shawl.
And bless my handiwork as it travels to bring comfort and peace
to someone in need of Your warming embrace.
    Amen

  • Basic Guidelines for Making shawls

Pray before beginning and during making the shawl.

    • Shawls may be knit or crochet, you may use any pattern from simple to complex and any color but the yarn should be soft.
    • We have found that while pretty, fringes are generally impractical for the person who is using the shawl.
    • The shawl should be large enought to wrap around a person approximately 24 inches by 68 inches.

    A Simple Pattern for Knitting:
Using size 13-15 needles. Cast on 57 stitches and knit. Continue knitting aproximately 3 skeins of yarn or until dementions above are met. Bind off.

    A Simple Pattern for Crocheting:
Using K hook, Chain 57. Switch to J hook, ch 2, turn. Double Crochet in 3rd chain from hoot and in every chin stich across chain row.
    * Ch 2, turn Dc into every Dc*
Repeat from * to * to desired length.
